A.I. VS. Real

 – Clarissa Burrows

As AI content generators become more sophisticated, more and more people are utilising this new and innovative way of creating original content for use online.

It’s much simpler to type prompts for the kinds of images, videos or text you want than to hire a content creator, copywriter, videographer, etc.

With that in mind, one might think that the roles of content creators using traditional means are null and void, however, this is not in fact, the case.

While it is faster and easier to use AI-generated content, the question of the quality of the content must be considered. While Google doesn’t penalise AI-generated content, if the content is poor, it will be ranked lower than higher-quality content. AI, as sophisticated as it may seem, is still new and therefore makes mistakes. Allowing unedited AI content to go live could be the reason algorithms don’t pick up your content due to various mistakes and inaccuracies. AI-generated content needs to be edited by a human before it goes live.

AI-generated content is currently noticeably or imperceptibly different from real content.

With regard to AI images, the slightly dreamy quality and the often inaccurate nature of the images are a dead giveaway, for example, this image. However, as AI gets better, the quality of generated images improves.

AI-generated text is also getting better over time and its capabilities are still being properly explored. Still, in time it will become more difficult to determine what was written by humans and what was written by AI.

AI-generated video can be total nightmare fuel, borderline real, or somewhere in between. It’s only going to get better over time and eventually, we’ll be at the point where it’s impossible to discern between “real” and AI-generated.

There are even various quizzes, that are surprisingly difficult, to see if you can differentiate between AI and real content, here, here and here.

AI-generated content is getting better, but a human eye is necessary to ensure AI content is high quality. Those edits made after content is generated could well be the difference between going viral or finding yourself on page 70 of the Google search results.

High-quality content is what you need to focus on, relevant, factual copy that answers questions, is thought-provoking and shares valuable information. Images that successfully illustrate meaning and share your message. Video that encapsulates and expresses what you need it to. All of these types of content will be ranked higher on Google and social media than disingenuous or “not quite right” content generated by AI.
