What Is Social Media Marketing For?
– Clarissa Burrows
We all know social media marketing is something a company must have. But what is it really for?
We’ve had some clients upset that their sales aren’t increasing dramatically or that they are not a household name after a month of social media marketing. That’s not what this kind of marketing is for though.
Social media marketing’s sole purpose is to increase brand awareness and like that Bathroom Bizarre commercial from the 90’s, marketing done right will last in people’s minds. Not everyone who heard the ad needed their products immediately, but when they did, they thought of Bathroom Bizarre.
That’s essentially what you should be doing with social media marketing. You should have a social media team or the HashTag ME team managing your online presence and being social. Hence *social* media. Let’s look at some fantastic examples of when social media teams improved a brand’s social standing and made it memorable to consumers, which eventually, turned into increased sales.
A customer posted a TikTok video complaining that her jacket was not waterproof and called on the company to bring her a new one while she was on her hike. It was a genuine complaint, delivered humorously, but a complaint nonetheless.
Well, North Face responded with a video of them delivering a new jacket to the TikToker, in a helicopter! It was hailed a marketing win and customers, potential customers, and viewers in general thoroughly enjoyed the video, so now, the company has created a positive opinion about themselves. Not only did they respond adorably, but they also did so publicly and everyone liked that!
This is another company that managed to push themselves to be noticed with their cheeky Twitter responses. They simply let their social media team say whatever they wanted and in the spirit of retail workers, they were very cheeky in their replies.
People loved their responses and roasts and the overall zeitgeist regarding Wendy’s improved significantly. Now the whole world knows that they’re funny and would probably try their food.
This barely needs unpacking. Nando’s’ marketing is simply the best. They offer satirical, cheeky and controversial commentary on the country and its events, often getting their adverts banned, and people love them for it. People already loved their food, but their marketing is top-tier so now people like them even more!
People actively look forward to Nando’s adverts when something big happens in the country. They’re known for their memorable marketing.
All the above companies are memorable because of their marketing. They’ve made a splash and now, regardless of the product they sell, people like them. This is the point of social media marketing.
Making people like you based on your sense of humour, snark or cheekiness and not your product. This is what you should aim to do with your online presence. Being memorable can happen in a variety of ways so you don’t need to copy the strategies of other companies, these are simply examples of marketing done right.
We can create a strategy to get your name out there and make it memorable. Trust us, we care about your reputation!
